Happy Half Year Eve?

Goodbye June and hello to the 11th day of summer…the 26th Friday…the 27th week…and the 182nd day of 2022, aka July 1st, 2022.  Simply stated, we have blown through the first half of 2022 which begs the question,

“How are those New Year’s Goals/Resolutions/”Intentions” going?”

Mine are not going so well.  Few have been crossed off my list, ok; none of them have been crossed off.  I admit I was a little disappointed with myself until I realized how very busy the first half of the year has been.

The chaotic speed began in mid January just after the Christmas decorations were taken down, boxed and stored.  By the time I reorganized our personal files for 2022 it was time to begin pulling tax information together.  Then it was time to schedule all those annual dental and physical exams.  And there were the hours I spent shoveling snow.  (Wink)

February rolled around and of course I had to support our Olympians in Beijing.  I spent many late nights cheering on our athletes and in particular watching Shaun White Mistyflip in the Pew Pew a few more times.

March brought NCAA Men’s Basketball madness and when your alma mater takes the hardwood, you have to be the sixth man, right?  Also in March, the red carpet rolls out for Oscar.  I had not seen any of the nominated movies, and that was just flat out unacceptable for me, a movie lover.  I spent a good ten nights streaming nominated flicks.  What is life without art?  The goals/projects list would have to wait until April.

April was productive and I was, in fact on a roll completing some projects, becoming somewhat disciplined and more scheduled.  But that momentum came to a screeching halt in May when I had cataract surgery.  The surgery went well, but these blue eyes were cattywampus for most of the month while they were healing.  This made reading difficult, physical labor ill advised and cooking absolutely too risky.  (Wink, wink.)

And that brings us to June.  You know how June goes…family comes to visit, graduations, weddings, showers, grands playing little league, the first outdoor concerts of the season, watering flowers.  I also felt it necessary to change the banner and profile picture on my Facebook page and it takes a minute to find the right photos, right?  June flew by.

Even though I was too busy to tackle the majority of my resolutions in the first six months of 2022, I did learn some interesting things that I am sure will serve me well going forward.  For example….

…in 1981 Mars Corp turned down Amblin Productions’ offer to partner with the film company to be the official candy for a silly little movie called ET the Extra-Terrestrail.  Hershey’s Reese’s Pieces took the spot and were quite happy to phone home a delicious 65% increase in sales.  (Hey, we all have regrets.)

I also learned that commercial airliners (as in a Boeing 737 for example) have, are you ready, horns. Like car horns! There is a button on the instrument panel marked “GND” that honks the horn which supposedly sounds like a steamboat.  Who do pilots honk at?

I learned a ridiculous word, which I cannot consistently pronounce:  sesquipedalian.  Wiktionary defines sesquipedalian as “…someone or something that overuses big words, like a philosophy professor or chemistry textbook. If someone gives a sesquipedalian speech, people often assume it was smart, even if they don’t really know what it was about because they can’t understand the words.”  (My promise to you is that this blog will never become sesquipedalian.)

Conversely, my new favorite word is “chuffed.”  It means to be very pleased.  I will use it in a sentence.

“I am chuffed that I have 183 days left to accomplish my 27 goals/projects/intentions I so optimistically committed to on New Year’s Eve 2021.”

What’s a boomer to do?  Repeat after me… “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”  Happy remaining 2022 Eve!  The best may be yet to come…go out and make it a memorable half year.

  1. This may be a wild guess… is addressing procrastination on your list? If so, I NEED to know your resolution in a future blog, please.
